What's at Stake?

As challenging as change can be, it's critical that we figure out how to navigate it. It isn't enough that we develop a desire to change; we need to figure out how to lead change effectively. If we don't, we're headed toward the slow death that comes with the embrace of the status quo.

Early Adopters

When we introduce change in almost any area of life, we'll get a variety of responses from people ranging from enthusiastic embrace to deep resistance. That comes as no surprise. What's notable is that people's responses are, for the most part, predictable. This is where some math and understanding a bit of human nature come in handy. Specifically, pay attention to the Early Adopters, and learn how to leverage their viewpoint and experience.

Focus

We always have a choice when it comes to focus, even in the midst of the conflict and distraction that change may bring about. It's understandable, and probably even natural, to pay the most attention to people who are already part of your church. But remembering people who are "not in the room" is critical to reaching outsiders. So, keep your eye on who you want to reach, not just who you want to keep.

Developing Your Filter

Anyone leading people through change needs a filter, a set of questions to ask when facing resistance. An effective filter not only keeps you on track, it saves time, minimizes frustration in the long run, and can even help you rally people around a change. Develop the right questions for your filter, because the questions you ask will determine the future you live.

You Are Not the Kingdom

No matter how well you lead change; no matter how much prayer, thought, and preparation you've invested in it; regardless of the fact that the change you're navigating is God-inspired, some people are still going to leave. And that's okay, because no single church body comprises the kingdom of God. Deal with it in a way that's healthy for everyone involved.

How Long Will It Take?

Navigating change is, in large part, about persevering to the end. If you quit before the breakthrough point, transformation won't happen. But that doesn't mean it has to take forever; there are practical steps you can take to speed the process. For instance, discover ways to help people "see" where you're leading them.
